To transport the paintings involved in the Sir Joshua Reynolds exhibition at Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery, we used our largest vehicles, so that we could carry not only the paintings but the couriers too, on the same vehicles.
One of the key exhibits, 'David Garrick between Comedy and Tragedy' (from the Rothschild collection at Waddesdon Manor), proved quite challenging for our art handlers. The work had to be taken down a narrow turning stairwell before it could be packed into a transit frame. The painting’s original frame is very ornate so extremely careful handling was required. When it arrived at Plymouth Museum, the work was rested, carefully unpacked and then carried into the gallery on the first floor.
Reynolds was native to Plympton and equally careful attention was paid to the transportation of the many early commissions lent by private owners.
